        Texas A&M University, in partnership with The Vaughn Gross Center for Reading and Language Arts at University of Texas, has been awarded an Institute of Education Sciences Teacher Quality Research—Reading/Writing grant (Deborah Simmons and William Rupley- Texas A&M University; Sharon Vaughn - University of Texas). This study will address the critical need to better understand the 4th grade slump by focusing on comprehension of content-area text.

The study also will address questions related to the effect of professional development on student learning by developing and evaluating the efficacy of a model based on the Fourth Grade Teacher Reading Academies and situated in social studies content and 4th grade classrooms.
